Near Urla’s İskele district lies Klazomenai, one of the twelve Ionian cities of the Aegean coast. Its remains are found on the shore and on the island known today as Karantina Island.
An ancient olive oil workshop
Klazomenai’s best-known find is an olive oil workshop dating to the 6th century BC. Excavated and reconstructed, it shows how olive oil was produced in antiquity and is considered one of the earliest known olive oil production sites in the world.
Visiting
The site is close to İskele and pairs well with a seafront walk. Check current opening conditions before you go, as access can change during excavation seasons.
Living close to history
İskele and its surroundings are among the most sought-after parts of Urla. Building rules can be affected by protected-site boundaries, so we review each plot’s status before purchase.
